SÍBS is a privately owned association working for the benefit of handicapped and sick people in Iceland. The association was originally founded in the year 1938 with the aim to fight tuberculosis and assist the patients suffering from the disease. As the severe health problem of tuberculosis has long ago been overcome in Iceland the association has turned its might against the most urgent present health problems at every time.

The association built, owns and runs „ REYKJALUNDUR “, the biggest and most advanced rehabilitation hospital in Iceland. Patients who have undergone heart surgery or have been subject to accidents of any kind, stroke, diseases in the central nerve system, and paralysis of various causes etc. can be rehabilitated there.

SÍBS also owns and runs „ MÚLALUNDUR “, the biggest rehabilitation workplace, which objective is to enable people who have suffered from various causes, and are therefore unable to participate in the common work market to become again active and productive members of our modern society.

SÍBS also runs in cooperation with the Icelandic Red Cross „ HLÍÐABÆR “, a home for Alzheimer patients and also „ MÚLABÆR “, a facility providing accommodation and recreational activity during working hours for lonely, elderly people.

Furthermore SÍBS has founded two therapeutic training centres supervised by medical doctors for chest patients, i.e. patients suffering from the diseases of heart or the lungs. It also provides grants for medical research and many other things.

SÍBS has only one source of income, which is The SÍBS Lottery, which was founded in the year of 1949. All the profit from the lottery is used to finance all the undertaking described here above.

The main office of the association is at Síðumúli 6, 108 Reykjavik, Tel. +354 552 2150, fax +354 562 9150.
